Stove Installation
We are log burner installers, fitting wood log stoves, wood pellet stoves, pellet boilers and cookers. Scarlett's are the longest running HETAS registered wood burning stove installers and chimney lining fitters in Essex and London.
A modern wood burner requires a high standard of installation to cope with the high temperatures created while burning wood logs as efficiently as possible over many heating seasons. Our tried and tested wood stove installation techniques ensure that every wood burner installation will allow the best operation possible for the chosen appliance. As part of the stove installation, our customers are fully trained in the art of using their new log stove safely and to its full efficiency potential. For more information on how to get the best from your log burner, see our wood fuel guide.
Can I fit a wood burning stove myself?
If you are competent to do the work safely, then yes you can install a stove yourself, how you fit it properly will depend on an array of site specifics. Be aware, however, there are many if's but's and maybes in part J of the building regulations that must be considered. Importantly, the work is notifiable by law to your local council building control. If you are HETAS or OFTEC registered for installing stoves, then you can self-certify and notify the council through your installer scheme. If you are not registered with any competent person’s scheme then you must have the work inspected and certified by the local council building control department, at a cost.
There are many grey areas surrounding the installation of a wood burning stove in England. If natural gas was the fuel, then it is black and white, you must be Gas Safe registered to install. In fact, a wood burning stove requires far more skills to install safely than a gas fire. If you get a stove installation wrong, the results can be devastating.
Before gas and oil was readily available, solid fuel heating was the most popular option for heating a house in England. Over hundreds of years, an industry developed new solid fuel heating technologies that were integrated into houses through traditional craftsmanship. Look up to the chimney pots in an old Victorian street, the structures built for their fires are still there! Many of the original fireplaces have survived over a hundred years or more. Nowadays it's becoming acceptable to buy a stove installation kit off the internet that relies on a jubilee clip at the top of the chimney to hold everything in place, and they call it progress!?
Bear in mind that it is a relatively simple process to become a HETAS or OFTEC registered stove installer, do not assume that they all use the same methods or work to the same standards.
A good British manufactured log burner from Charnwood Stoves or Clearview Stoves will last for decades if installed and used correctly. At Scarlett Fireplaces we learn from the high standards of solid fuel heating that our ancestors strived for. We design each log burner and fireplace installation individually to compliment its surroundings in a way that enhances the property and the lifestyles of its occupants. As chimney lining installers, we sympathetically install flue liners into existing brick chimneys, the exact long lasting method used will depend on the age and type of chimney to be relined. If you have no chimney, we can build one in brick or stainless steel.
