Black granite is a favourite, however as with all types of stone, there are varying colours and unique natural vein patterns to choose from. Granite hearth finishes are either polished, for a shiny smooth surface or honed for a duller textured surface. Granite hearths can withstand high temperatures found in fireplaces but must be installed as sections near hot wood fires to allow for expansion.
Granite Hearths for Fireplaces
Granite works well with modern and traditional fireplace designs. A polished granite hearth can be less practical with a wood burning stove because the smooth shiny surface does not hold on to ash that can fall from the fire. A better option is to use a honed granite hearth.
