Slate Hearths
Slate hearth finishes are either polished for a smooth surface, natural for an authentic finish or riven for a uniformed textured surface. Slate can withstand high temperatures found in fireplaces but must be installed as sections near hot wood fires to allow for expansion.
Polished smooth slate, popular with gas fires, is not very practical when used with a real working solid fuel fire such as a wood stove because the polished surface scratches easily.
It is best to oil slate hearths to protect the finished surface.
