Project Info:

A Victorian tiled open fire with stone fireplace mantel that we updated by installing a high efficiency Contura i4 wood burning stove.

The inefficient open coal fire had served this Victorian house in Maldon for over 160 years. Being a house that was originally built and occupied by the British Army, the chimneys would have been well used for many years, mainly because the army officers were given cheap coal and servants. The continuous use of coal had caused chemical reactions within the old brick chimney that resulted in the internal feather walls of the flues to collapse. Our specialist chimney heritage team carefully toothed out the original brickwork to expose the internal collapse. The missing brickwork was replaced and repaired, and the chimney was relined using a stainless steel flexible liner with an insulating wrap. The old open fire back and grate were removed and a Contura i4 modern low smoke emission wood stove was fitted. The fireplace now continues to heat this old house in the way it was designed albeit in a modern zero carbon way.
